The Ambassador. Dr. Palitha Kohona met with Mr. Luo Zhaohui, Chairman of CIDCA on 14 October 2021 to discuss the proposal of Establishing the High-Tech and Agriculture University in Sri Lanka.
Chairman Luo agreed to start the process of establishing the High-Tech and Modern Agriculture University in Hambantota, Sri Lanka. The Ambassador welcomed the proposal to convene a meeting of CIDCA, the Ministry of Education of China, the Great Wall Industry Corporation and the Wuhan University to further refine the proposal.
A detailed plan with drawings has already been prepared by the Wuhan University together with the Great Wall Industry Corporation. The Ambassador said that he expects that the proposed University to blossom in due course, and develop technical skills and modern agriculture technology needed by Sri Lanka for its development.
During the discussion, Mr. Luo also broached the issue of broadening bilateral cooperation between China and Sri Lanka. Especially, he emphasized the importance of an FTA between Sri Lanka and China to increase Sri Lanka’s exports to China.
He referred to the successful Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) with ASEAN countries which has resulted in the massive increase in ASEAN exports to China.
The Ambassador said that the capital was examining the issues related to the draft FTA.
